What is voice of the customer (VoC)?
Voice of the customer is the established practice of capturing what customers say through surveys, reviews, support tickets and other direct channels.
VoC programs have often been run by customer experience or research teams, with findings shared periodically across the company.
VoC captures explicit customer voice. It doesn't cover behavior or wider market signal on its own.
Why it matters for product builders
VoC keeps customer language in product decisions. Without it, teams can mistake internal assumptions for customer needs.
What changes in AI-first products
VoC used to produce a periodic report. It can now become a continuous input to product decisions, processed alongside behavior and ambient signal as each changes.
The output changed too. Instead of stopping at an insight deck, customer voice can stay attached to the priority and spec that reaches the build.
