What is product development?

Product development is the whole path from an idea to something customers can use: discovery, design, building, shipping and finding out what happened.

Teams draw the boundary differently. Some use the term for the engineering half. Others include everything from the first customer conversation.

Product development isn't the same as software development. Software development is the building step. Product development also includes deciding what to build and checking whether it worked.

Why it matters for product builders

The boundary matters when work falls between teams. Whoever owns product development usually owns those gaps too.
